Östgöta home from the past

Industrialisation led to a large migration of labour from the countryside to the city and there was a fear that the working class would forget its origins. To counteract that, they wanted to show what an Östgöta home looked like in the past, and thereby hoped to rekindle interest in the home district.

When the buildings were moved to Linköping in 1913, they were also intended to be the beginning of an Östragötland Skansen.

Appreciated tourist destination

In 1916 Krogsfall was opened to the public and quickly became a popular destination. One room of the apartment building was furnished with 1850s furniture and the other room was to reflect an 18th century interior.

In the 1930s, the couple's cabin was subjected to vandalism and was therefore fitted with shutters.

When the museum building on Vasavägen was opened in 1939, interest in Krogsfallsgården decreased and since the 1960s the buildings have basically been closed and boarded up. In recent years, the couple's cottage and loft shed have been renovated by the museum's conservators.

Educational activity

Today Östergötlands museum primarily conducts educational activities in Krogsfallsgården.

Here, Linköping's schoolchildren can travel back in time and get an insight into a historical era when Sweden was mostly an agricultural society where the perception of time was cyclical, based on the rhythm of agriculture according to the seasons and the religious holidays.
